What can I expect from my first appointment?

During your first appointment, we will discuss your medical and dental history, plan effective cleaning methods to ensure your teeth stay healthy, perform an examination and cleaning, and schedule any necessary appointments for further procedures.

How long does a routine check-up take?

How often should I visit for a dental exam and cleaning?

Exams and cleanings should be conducted once every six months.

Are x-rays necessary and how often do I need them?

X-rays should be conducted once per year, or if an examination turns up something that should be inspected more closely.

I’m pregnant. Can I see a dentist?

Yes, in fact, it is highly recommended you come in for regular checkups while pregnant. Pregnancy hormones can affect your gums, causing them to become inflamed, infected, and sometimes bleed.

Is your office kid-friendly?

Our office and staff are both kid friendly, and we love meeting children and showing them around. We want to introduce them to the dental setting as easily as possible, and encourage them to come in.

At what age do you recommend a child have their first dentist appointment?

Children should have their first dental appointment right after their first tooth appears, but it shouldn’t be any later than 12 months, even if no teeth have come in yet.

What are sealants and why should my child get them?

Sealants fill the pits and grooves of the back teeth, preventing bacteria from becoming lodged there and being missed by regular brushing.

What is considered a dental emergency?

If you have had a tooth, crown, or bridge knocked out, damaged, or puncture your gums, this is a dental emergency and you should come to our office right away.

What do I do if I have an emergency?

What do I do if a dental emergency happens after hours?

Proceed to a local emergency room for immediate treatment and contact us again during business hours.

Do I need insurance to be a patient?

You don’t need insurance to be a patient, but it does help with covering some of the costs for procedures.

How do I care for my teeth between check-ups?

Regular brushing, flossing, and oral rinses will help maintain the health of your teeth. Be sure to clean all the nooks and crannies around your teeth, including behind and between them. Gently brush your gums, tongue, and palate to keep breath fresh and maintain healthy gums as well.

What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay is generally caused by a lack of care for your teeth. This can be exacerbated by constantly eating and drinking sugary foods or beverages, drinking a lot of soda, or just plain not brushing and flossing.

What is a cavity?

Cavities are small gaps that form on the outside of your teeth, leading into the pulp cavity, where your tooth’s nerves and blood vessels are located.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a gum disease that results in inflamed or bleeding gums.

How do I prevent gum disease?

Regular brushing and flossing, combined with regular checkups at the dentist will help reduce the likelihood of developing gum disease. Treat your gums with care just like your teeth, and they will be healthy and disease free.

What is dental scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing are deep cleaning techniques we use to target and eliminate deep set plaque and tartar.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Dental x-rays are very safe. We limit the exposure of all patients to x-rays, as they are a form of radiation. The levels given during an x-ray examination are not harmful to humans.

When should I change my toothbrush?

The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or when the bristles become frayed, whichever occurs first.
